PC4L (PB4L)

PC4L (Positive Culture for Learning) is our version of the Ministry of Education’s PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) programme, as positive behaviour is the culture we want to develop at our kura.

At Pōmare School, we believe that the best way to achieve positive behaviour is to teach ākonga what is expected of them. In the same way we teach children to read and write, we must teach them what positive behaviour looks, sounds and feels like. There are no quick fixes for learning or behaviour, and these changes take time.

Everything we do at Pōmare School is underpinned by our five PRIDE values – Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Diversity and Empathy. Our tamariki know these values and what they mean.

To ensure we have a shared understanding of what the values look like, we have developed an expectations matrix which unpacks them in different circumstances. Elements of the matrix are taught daily, so students are clear about what is expected of them.

Gold cards are awarded to students who demonstrate our values in the classroom and the playground. Our tamariki love being recognised for their positive behaviours, and recognise one another through our Te Toa o Te Wiki process where they nominate peers who they have noticed living our values.

Alongside the gold cards, students receive gems, which are collected across the school. Once our ‘gem jar’ is full, the whole school is rewarded for the positive behaviours they have lived. No student is left out, as the focus is on the learning and changing for the better.

On the odd occasion where things go wrong, we use a Restorative Practices approach to repair relationships. In this process, students work with a staff member to see what went wrong, how it impacts them and others, to take responsibility for their actions, to put things right, and to make better choices in the future.

The main focus of Restorative Practices is to make sure the mana of all parties is restored, so everyone can thrive.
